Simultaneous interpreting is not the same as translation

Translation delivers text afterwards. Simultaneous interpreting delivers meaning in real time — with equipment, channels and often an ISO 4043 cabin. Real-time errors are business and reputation risk.

Translation: written transfer between languages, with time for quality control.

Simultaneous interpreting: the interpreter works in parallel with the speaker — typically in a sound-isolated cabin — so delegates hear their language without noticeable delay.

Tolkeboks.no supplies equipment and booths for SI. We do not rent out interpreters.

When professional SI equipment is required

Multilingual plenary, board, negotiations, politics and congresses where delegates must follow the programme live.

When error or delay is unacceptable — “just a translation later” is not enough.

FAQ

Can we rely on text translation during the conference?

Only if delegates do not need to follow the programme live. Live multilingual plenary needs simultaneous interpreting and suitable equipment.
